Nicolette Gray ♦ Diamond Jubilee

To learn about 19th-century display types originating in The United Kingdom, one must begin at Square One, the definitive research of Nicolette Gray: XIXth Century Ornamented Types and Title Pages (Faber and Faber Limited, London 1938).

More than three-quarters of a century has passed since her cherished book was published. In the meantime, The Internet and Personal Computer have equipped today’s researchers with resources she barely glimpsed during her lifetime [1911-1997].

Without stepping away from our desks, we are empowered with “virtual magic”: digital type specimens assembled from libraries all over the world—easily organized, cross-indexed and retrieved for side-by-side comparison on the computer monitor!

Gray‘s Disclaimer. In Appendix II|Type Specimen Books (pages 107–108), she describes the daunting task of dating (she preferred “naming”) catalogs from such clues as registration records, price lists, awards cited, firm name/address, etc. and concludes that when in doubt,  she “tended to date books too late rather than too early.” Furthermore, she dealt with many loose sheets “stuck in” to bound books by the original recipient.

Divider

For The Record, the following (never-ending?) tabulation supplements her work with information not available to her.

  • The search feature below displays only the rows containing keywords.
  • Additional information (forum topic, etc.), if any, is linked to specimen thumbnails.
  • Please see the key to symbols and abbreviations below the chart.
  • Click the column headings to sort the information by tradename, producer, etc.
  • The default order is by book page number with lettered specimen references and footnote numbers in parentheses.
  • For precise alphanumeric sorting by “UK Origin/Tradename,” approximate dates reckoned by Gray are entered with “c”  (circa, approximately) following the year.
