How to search PDFs

  • PDFs produced by Microsoft are OCR-enabled [optical character recognition], so the text is searchable.
  • Those produced by Google Books are searchable only when viewed at books.google.com. The downloaded version is not OCR-enabled.
  • To easily find a keyword in a google PDF, create a browser bookmark to the www view. Search the online version; then navigate to the same page in your own copy.
  • If your PDF viewer supports bookmarking, the phrases you enter are searchable as text by your file manager.
