Italian TextNicolette Gray reports a matching specimen tradenamed Italian Text shown by Besley (a fore-runner of the Reed & Fox/Fann St. TF) in c1857,¹ a year after it was shown by the Bruce TF (New York).

The earliest specimen examined by THP is illustrated in Hænel (Berlin) 1847—a decade before Besley! Bauer notes that Hænel imported much stock from England and France.² Considering the time span, one suspects that the design originated in France.

THP Partner Robert Donona has volunteered to digitize this intricate light-face toughie!
