Spartan was patented by William F. Capitain in October–December 1886 [USPTO D17013]. He assigned the design to Marder, Luse & Co. As you observed, Contour No. 2 is the outline derivative.
It seems odd today… Marder Luse routinely named all outline faces Contour No. ___. Like most TFs, they did not associate them with their prototypes. In the 1890 catalog, specimens of Spartan and Contour No. 2 were placed 40 pages apart!
Searches at myfonts and google find no digital versions (at least none admitting to a revival). Let me know if you want the patent specimen.
